If you or anybody in your family are prone to allergies, a longhaired cat is certainly not the best choice. (check out Hypoallergenic in “Health” file).
Simply said, longhaired cats need daily brushing, a regular bath and sometimes shaving by a professional groomer (if you live in a hot climate). Regardless of how diligent you are with grooming, you may have to deal with the extensive shedding on furniture and clothes.
If nobody is willing or able to take responsibility for this meticulous task in addition to the daily feeding and cleaning the litter box, go for the low maintenance shorthaired breeds.
